Have you ever asked yourself "why do people dream?" There are a lot of theories on dreams, but a single answer has not been agreed upon.
I love to have dreams (except when they're nightmares, of course).
Dreams let you have experiences that you may not have in your conscious hours, and sometimes provide you with quiet whispers of guidance.
There is a whole science dedicated to the theories of dreaming, what causes dreams, the meaning behind dreams, and the types of dreams a person can have.
What Are Dreams?
Sleeping and dreaming go hand in hand. Dreaming while you sleep happens very often, even if you don't remember your sleep dreams when you wake up.
Dreams occur during about one-fifth of our nightly sleep.
They happen during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) Sleep, and are filled with narratives, symbols and detailed scenery. By studying the meanings of dreams, you can find out a lot about what might be happening in a person's waking hours.
What Causes Dreams?
Our dream understanding is still limited, but an agreed upon theory by those that study dreams is that dreams alrert us to important aspects of our unconcious mind. So, What is a dream and what causes it? Click here to find out.
How Long Do Dreams Last?
Although time may seem very distorted when during sleep dreams--sometimes things seem like they are over in a blink, while other times dreams felt like they went on forever--most dreams range from 5 to 45 minutes. This is how long REM sleep periods last, which is the stage of sleep that you dream in.
Finding out what dreams mean helps you to understand yourself better, and learning about dream symbolism can be a lot of fun!

Christian Interpretation of Dreams
Christians revived the belief that dreams were supernatural events. The Bible speaks of Christian dream symbols and christian dream interpretation. Click here for a closer look at Christians interpretations of dreams.
Dream Research
There are many theories on dreams, and research is constantly being done to learn more about why we dream, and the meaning of dreams.
For all its advances in other directions, science has so far failed to come to a full understanding even of the theatre in which dreams occur (sleep), let alone the full knowledge of the dreams themselves.
Dream Diary
Dream research is one of the few remaining areas where the layperson is as competent as the professional. It requires no equipment beyond on a notebook for keeping a diary of dreams (or a dream box if you wish) and a pencil for writing down dreams, an alarm clock for those who have difficulty with dream recall, some guidance on dream interpretation, and the necessary level of motivation and perseverance.
Armed with these minimal resources, all of us can explore deeper and deeper into our dream life, and reach our own conclusions as to the function and value of dreams in our life as a whole.
Dream Catchers
My children each have an Indian Dream Catcher above their beds, and they love the idea that it will help ward off bad dreams.
Native American dream catchers are round charms that have a "net" design sewn in the middle usually made of willow or sinew. There are feathers hanging below the dream catcher.
It is believed that good dreams pass through the net, and bad dreams get caught in it to be dissolved by the light of dawn. The good dreams that make it through slide down the feathers to the sleeping person below.
